What is counselling?

You can find the The Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia’s College of Counselling definition here.

What’s the difference between seeing a counsellor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist or social worker?

I understand that this can be confusing! Generally, ‘therapist’, ‘psychotherapist’ and ‘counsellor’ are terms used interchangeably. They are words used to describe a professional who provides therapeutic mental health support. I am a registered counsellor and psychotherapist (through PACFA). I hold undergraduate qualifications in psychology, gender and cultural studies and postgraduate qualifications in counselling and psychotherapy.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who diagnose and prescribe medication. Some psychiatrists also practice longer-term psychotherapy.

Psychologists often work in assessment and testing, clinical, educational or forensic settings. Psychologists are able to provide Medicare rebates through initiatives such as Mental Health Care Plans and can write official reports (for example, court proceedings).

Social workers provide a wide range of support including case management, advocacy, community work and counselling. Some social workers are specialised in counselling and therapy. They are referred to as Accredited Mental Health Social Workers and are eligible to provide Medicare rebates.

Do you bulk bill or offer Medicare rebates?

I am currently unable to bulk bill, offer Medicare or private healthcare rebates. My private fee sliding scale is a reduced rate to most market-rates for therapy (market rate is often up to $260/hr) and Rough Patch’s fee model is significantly reduced. This means that sessions with me cost less per session than with most psychologists, even after a Medicare rebate. Accessibility is important to me, so we can always talk about financial options that suit you.

I’m not an Australian citizen, can I see you?

Yes - I welcome working with people without Australian citizenship, people on various visas or international students.

How long can I see you for?

To reduce long waitlists and make counselling more accessible, Rough Patch offers 30 sessions in a 12 month period. Lots can happen in this time, but should you require more sessions I will work with you to find suitable longer-term support.

In private therapy at Ellis Counselling & Psychotherapy, how long we meet for is something we can decide together and is guided by you. I am more experienced in short-medium term counselling.

Are you LGBTIQ+ / queer friendly?

I am deeply passionate about providing affirming, anti-oppressive support for all people, particularly queer and LGBTIQ+ folk. I am a cisgender, bi/pansexual woman and I seek to problematise the power and privilege I hold as a product of my positionalities. Your safety is of utmost priority to me, so feel free to reach out and ask how I can better support this if we were to work together.
